Younis Khan advises Babar Azam to learn ‘major lesson’ from Virat Kohli

Former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan wants their white-ball skipper Babar Azam to learn a major lesson from Virat Kohli. Notably, Babar has been under fire due to his poor form in recent times across formats. Babar failed to play a major knock in the ODI World Cup 2023 as Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament in the league stage itself.
Under his leadership, the Men in Green were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stage itself losing against first-timers USA. He also performed poorly in their recent 0-2 series loss against Bangladesh scoring just 64 runs from four innings. Commenting on his poor form, Younis mentioned the burden of expectations on his shoulders and advised the star batter to focus on his fitness and work ethic.
“There are high expectations from Babar. Players should use social media wisely, but their real answers should come through their performances with the bat and ball. He (Babar) needs to focus on his fitness and work ethic because opportunities like these don’t come around often,” said Younis at a press event in Pakistan.
Further speaking ahead, Younis suggested Babar to take a leaf out of Virat Kohli’s book and let go of his captaincy as the India star is on a record-breaking spree following his decision.
“He has achieved a lot at such a young age, but what he needs to know what he wants to achieve in the future. Captaincy is a small thing, performance is what matters. Look at Virat Kohli. He chose to step down from captaincy on his own terms, and now he’s breaking records worldwide. This shows that playing for the country should be the priority. If there’s any energy left, then play for yourself,” he added.
The biggest cause of worry for Pakistan is Babar’s Test form where he hasn’t been able to score a half century in his last 16 innings with a highest score of 39. Pakista will next host England for a three-match Test series beginning from October 7.
All eyes will be once again on Babar as Pakistan search for their first Test victory at home since February 2021.
